2009 Vans and Minivans Buyer's Guide

This 2009 Vans and Minivans Buyer’s Guide is a compiled list of the top-performing vans and minivans from J.D. Power and Associates three key automotive studies. The studies include the 2008 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), the 2008 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study, and the 2008 Initial Quality Study (IQS). In addition, we have also noted any models in the guide that have earned “5-star" crash test scores from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), or have been chosen as “Top Safety Picks" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). All models are listed alphabetically by manufacturer.

2009 Chevrolet Express

The Chevrolet Express full-size van was first available in 1996. The traditional rear-wheel-drive van with a body-on-frame design is often configured as a passenger, cargo or conversion van much like the Ford E-Series, its main competition. For this reason, it is available with windows (passengers) or without (cargo), and in short- and long-wheelbase models depending on its intended service usage. There are many different engine choices ranging from V-6 gasoline to V-8 diesel. All send power through a 4-speed automatic transmission. The standard driveline is rear-wheel drive with all-wheel drive optional, the latter making the Express unique in the marketplace. The standard 2WD 1500 model earned ratings of 13 mpg city and 16 mpg highway in EPA fuel economy testing. In our 2008 Initial Quality Study (IQS), the industry benchmark for new-vehicle quality measured at 90 days of ownership, the Chevrolet Express van ranked among the top three models in its segment. It also fared very well in crash testing by earning “5-star" crash test scores from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). After a freshening in 2008, the Express returns for 2009 with enhanced safety features, 17-inch wheels, and additional option choices.
